The Walton County School Board (WCSB) met for their regularly scheduled meting on the afternoon of May 5, at 5 p.m.
The meeting opened with Walton High School teacher Tracy Nick accepting a grant for $13,500 from Janet Greeno, executive director of the St. Joe Community Foundation, Inc.
The board then moved unanimously to approve the opening agenda items as well as the consent agenda items before them.
Under the action agenda, the board approved agreements and contracts, applications for grants and personnel recommendations.
Under facilities and construction, the board approved a reduction in the costs of Freeport classroom additions.
Under administration, the board moved 4-1, with board member Mark Davis being the nay vote over the 2015-2016 school calendar. Davis has long been vocal over the issue of half-days, and the problem of parents having to find childcare in some circumstances. Those working on the calendar stressed the importance of teachers having time for professional development.
Student expulsions followed with four cases. The board approved the superintendent’s recommendation in all presented, but Davis and board member Jason Catalano voted nay on one case, leaving the vote at 3-2 on the expulsion. Both expressed concerns over the case, with Davis questioning if the student had enough infractions to warrant an expulsion recommendation.
The board will meet at 5 p.m., May 13 in a special meeting to discuss student progression plans and high school graduation requirements. They will again meet on May 19 at 5 p.m. at the South Walton High School in the media room for the second meeting of the month.
