Walton Middle School’s annual Veterans Day Program, now in its 41st year, honored the sacrifices and service of the local men and women who served in the United States armed forces.
What began more than four decades ago as a small gathering for veterans and their families has today become one of the high points of the school’s academic year and, beyond that, among the fixtures of community events.
The WMS observances brought together students and serviceman alike from around DeFuniak Springs just as it always has, but for 2013 the students of the school’s civics and history classes, as well as members of the band and drama club, ran the program. The event, held Friday, Nov. 8, packed out the school’s gymnasium as members of the community came to honor the sacrifices made by veterans on the nation’s behalf. Presentations on the individual service branches, musical performances, dramatic readings and more put on by the aforementioned student groups, and the duties of posting and retiring the flags was handled by members of the Walton High School Air Force Junior RTOC.
