WHERE IN THE HERALD IS KAYLA SIMS? Kayla Sims, recently named to the President’s Honor Roll List at UWF and winner of a scholarship from the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, takes a break from her morning swim to catch-up with The DeFuniak Herald while studying at the Global Learning Institute on the Island of Cyprus this summer. Kayla resides in Fort Walton Beach with her grandparents, Bobby and Jane Scott, and is the great-granddaughter of the late Wilfred and Evelyn Scott.

 

KANE WAS JUST AS HAPPY TO SEE THE KIDS as they were to see the German Shepherd. K9 officers demonstrated the ways that the county’s four-legged deputies search for drugs or other contraband and explained the process that goes into training the dogs to work in law enforcement. County deputies and about 25 kids from the local area spent the week of July 8 – 12 getting to know each other at the first summer day camp hosted exclusively by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO). A RETIREMENT PARTY was held on Friday, July 19, for NWFSC Chautauqua Center Director Barbara Jones (center with hat). She was joined by fellow staff members and friends alike for cake and light refreshments. “It is very nice that the staff would do this for me,” Jones said. “This is a bit of a bittersweet moment for me leaving the school I love. However I do feel very good about my successor. Julie Terrell will bring a great energy to the Chautauqua Center. THE WALTON BRAVES cheerleading squad recently participated in a 2-day stunt camp with instructors from the National Cheerleading Association. This co-ed squad is preparing for the upcoming Braves Football season as well as the 2013-2014 season of competition cheerleading. Kymberlyn Murphy is the newly selected cheer captain. Kelsey Youell and Samantha Kirby are the co-captains. Capri Zodrow returns as the WHS cheer sponsor.
