FORTY-FIVE ATTENDEES in all gathered on the steps of Walton County Courthouse to celebrate Juneteenth. In Florida, the Emancipation Proclamation was read on May 20, 1865 when Brig. Gen. Edward McCook proclaimed in Tallahassee that the Emancipation Proclamation was now in force in Florida. Juneteenth commemorates that event.
