The hits keep on coming for Freeport High grad and University of Arkasas signee Gabe Moore, as he repeated last year’s feat by qualifying to represent Team USA in international competition.
Moore finished second in the junior decathlon at the 2014 USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, held June 25-26 in Sacramento. His score of 7,594 brought him in just behind team mate and friend Harrison Williams, who turned in a final score of 7,734 to take the win. Moore claimed first in the 100-meter run with a time of 10.80 seconds and in the long jump, setting a mark of 23 feet, 6 inches, and he finished no lower than 10th spot throughout the dec’s 10 events.
A mark of 142-6 gave Moore second place in the discus, and a time of 48.78 took him to a third place finish in the 400-meter run (48.78). Those were followed by fourth spot in both the shot put (44-6 ¼) and the high jump (6-5), with Moore falling about two inches behind the first place finishers in either event. Moore finished sixth in two events – the javelin throw (165-10), the 1500-meter run (4:48.87) – and tied for sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 13-9 1/4, with his lowest finish being 10th in the 110-meter hurdles (14.98).
Next up for Moore, who last year placed sixth in the International Association of Athletics Federations’ World Youth Games in Ukraine, and the other 87 Team USA athletes is a trip to the World Junior Championships, set for July 22-27 in Eugene, Ore.
