Academic Team Champion awards for the winter sports have been announced by the FHSAA. The Freeport girls basketball team claimed top honors in Class 2A as Mike Myrick’s group had a 3.693 GPA to lead all schools in the state. South Walton’s boys basketball team finished fourth among Class 3A squads in the state with a 3.255 cumulative team GPA. The Freeport boys basketball team was fifth in Class 2A with a team GPA of 3.288. The South Walton girls basketball team was fourth in Class 3A with a team GPA of 3.631 while Walton was fifth with a GPA of 3.546.
Results from the Ram Relays for area middle schools in track and field last week included a fourth place finish for the Walton boys with Emerald Coast coming in seventh among 12 squads competing. On the girls side, Freeport was second with Walton fourth and Emerald Coast eighth among 11 squads competing.
The Northwest Florida baseball team is 19-12 overall and 2-3 in Panhandle Conference play. Former Walton baseball player Sean Carter has appeared in eight games for the Raiders and has pitched 7.2 innings in relief for the squad.
The Northwest Florida softball team is 33-3 overall and 4-0 in Panhandle Conference play. Former Freeport softball player Nicole Dykes has played in three games for the Raiders and has one hit in four at-bats with a runs scored and an RBI.
Former Jay baseball player Brandt Hendricks has apparently been redshirted by the University of Alabama this season. Hendricks signed with Alabama in November 2007 to play baseball for the Crimson Tide and is slated to play the outfield, though apparently not this season as he does not appear on their 2009 roster.
