Lakefest: a cool way to spend a Saturday

By ALICIA LEONARD
A steady stream of visitors did not let the heat and humidity deter them from having a great time at the first Lakefest held by the city of DeFuniak Springs and lots of local sponsors. Crowds milled around circle drive after racers finished up logging in the miles earlier in the morning. Paddle boarders and kayakers took to the water to cool off and paddle for fun.
Car lovers had lots to enjoy as classic cars lined both sides of Circle Drive, and rock music played by local bands wafted up from the amphitheater, adding to the atmosphere. Some enjoyed horse-drawn carriage rides and shopping. The snow cone stand did a brisk business with young and old alike and craftsmen sold their wares under tents lining both sides of the street.
The streets were crowded around high noon, with people milling all the way around the lake to see everything included in the festival. City employees and volunteers scurried about in golf carts, keeping an eye on the festivities and offering help for those who had questions.
Little ones enjoyed everything from watermelon spitting contests, bounce houses, face painting, dunking booths and many more activities. Walking tours of the lake yard were available for those interested in the area. Local businesses like Walton Outdoors setup tables down by the lake to share information about local wildlife and activities, while families milled about at the water’s edge feeding some very happy ducks.
If the crowds the Herald/Breeze encountered were any indication, the first Lakefest was a resounding success for all those involved.
