PDL Softball 8-3 at Break

By PATRICK CASEY

The Ponce de Leon Lady Pirates picked up a 6-2 victory at home over Wewahitchka on Thursday in a District 3, Class A contest.

The Pirates picked up their third victory in a row and enter spring break week with an 8-2 mark in the district with only two district games remaining before the district tournament in Cottondale the week of April 16.

Marissa Powell picked up the victory on the mound as she pitched all seven innings while allowing only two runs.

PDL built a 5-0 lead after three innings of play as Delilah Bass and Ashley Harper singled and eventually scored with the help of a fielder’s choice and a throwing error followed by a sacrifice by Powell. Brittany Alford drove in the final run of the inning for a lead the Pirates would never relinquish.

Wewa’s Victoria Lanter scored the first run for the Gators in the sixth inning as she singled and advanced to third base when the ball scooted past a Pirates outfielder. Tara Walding drove her in with a base hit to cut the lead to 6-1.

The Gators scored another run in the top of the seventh inning when senior Sarah Luckie doubled in a teammate to cut the lead to 6-2. Luckie was stranded at third base when the Pirates recorded the final out of the game.

The Pirates return to action next week with a Tuesday contest at home against Vernon before traveling to Holmes County on Thursday and Wewahitchka on Friday.
